Meddling Mage - 3 versions

Remember the Titans?

Unterhaltungvon Kumagoro (2019-07-04)

It's been exactly ten years since Magic 2010 changed the way that core sets were designed and perceived. Part of this revised approach has been the constant presence of a cycle of five monocolored finishers leading the charge for the new creatures of any given core set since then.

Modern Petitioning

Constructedvon JohnnyCroat (2019-06-06)

The most important thing when trying to build a tribal deck is redundancy. Whatever your strategy, you need enough redundancy to ensure your tribal synergy is consistent. Kind of like Jund... only a bit more Johnny… JohnnyCroat that is!

Humans in the Current Modern Metagame

Constructedvon JaminK (2019-04-09)

In a Modern metagame defined by Faithless Looting and Ensnaring Bridge, a deck that disrupts the opponent while applying pressure might be the key to victory. We'll go through a current decklist, discuss interesting slots in the deck to beat the meta and walk through the two most important matchups.

Understanding Aggro

Constructedvon HansD (2019-02-05)

With Mono-Red aggro lighting up the stage in Standard, I want to take a look this week at what makes the aggro archetype tick. By breaking down and examining how these decks are built to be powerful, we can begin to understand why there will almost always be aggressive decks running around any given format!

Four Underrated Sideboards for the Current Modern Meta

Constructedvon HansD (2018-11-20)

Everyone knows Stony Silence and Rest in Peace, but how about the hard hitters that don't see as much play in players' sideboards? Hans has decided to highlight four cards that, despite their effectiveness against the current meta, don't see enough play in sideboards.

Rather Exhumed: Coming Down from the Grave

Constructedvon Rone (2018-11-09)

"Graveyard matters" cards are a key element in the Modern metagame. With Dredge on the rise due to Creeping Chill, we need to re-evaluate maindeck hate and how certain strategies rely on this part of the game. In today's article, Rodrigo ranks the format's tier decks based on their graveyard dependency.

Myth & Magic: Anima Mundi, the World Soul

Unterhaltungvon JohnnyCroat (2018-10-01)

Elementals are a wonderful creature type, as they can essentially be whatever a set needs at any given time. Their mythos and origins are somewhat more academic than goblins or dragons. So, make yourself a cup of tea and let me walk you through some of the philosophical aspects of what we know as Anima Mundi, the World Soul.

Dangerous Propositions: Umezawa's Jitte

Constructedvon Kumagoro (2018-09-17)

The Modern ban list is a maximum-security prison with 33 inmates, some of which pose a potentially serious threat to the meta. But now that Big Jace has been released, anything can happen. Let's review each of those offenders to see if they're eligible for parole. This time we talk about the most broken piece of equipment ever designed.

Modern Metagame Review: 2018 Summer Edition

Constructedvon Rone (2018-09-11)

Summer is over and the Guilds of Ravnica spoilers have officially begun. While waiting for new cards to improve or create new archetypes, let's review how the Modern format has been performing during the past three months divided into winners, losers, and new brews.

Storming Off in Prague

Event-Coveragevon Andifeated (2018-09-06)

The Modern Metagame is in a constant state of change these days. A few months ago, Andifeated thought his pet deck U/R Gifts Storm has been pushed out of the top decks because of an abysmal Humans matchup, but the tides have changed again. Follow him through his deck choice process and tournament for Grand Prix Prague.

In a fortunate series of events, Jamin took down a Modern MOCS playoff. In this week's article he talks about his road to the MOCS, his experience in Modern and how he arrived at the deck he played to this impressive finish.

The Golden Rules of Modern - Part One

Constructedvon HansD (2018-08-14)

Modern is a great format to theory-craft in, with an ever-evolving metagames and a deep card pool to feed discussions and theories about the format. This also means that what was once true in Modern no longer apply – a good example of this is, "Don't tap out against Twin on turn three" – but there are also long-standing rules that every Modern player should be aware of if he or she wants to play well. The first three of these "Golden Rules of Modern" might be ones you know already, but they also might be ones you haven't thought about yet. Let's jump right in and take a look at our first, and arguably the most famous, rule.

Looking at GP Barcelona and the Post-Tournament Metagame

Event-Coveragevon HansD (2018-07-09)

Isn't Modern great? Non-interactive decks like KCI and Tron run roughshod over the metagame, and in one weekend, we get five UW Control decks that top sixteen a Modern GP. It's a wild, wild world, and I want to take a quick look at how the direction of the format provided a window of opportunity for the control archetype, how the UW decks took advantage of the opportunity, and what this will mean for the metagame going forward. Let's jump right in!

Rogue Deck Review: The Recent Notables

Looking for something spicy and different to play this week? Hans has you covered in this week’s article as he digs up the rogue decks that have caught his attention. The only way to find out if there’s something of interest is to take a look inside!

Dominaria Set Review for Modern

Spoilervon Rone (2018-04-24)

Dominaria's release is on the horizon and that means once thing for Modern players: time to brew decks and figure out which cards help which archetypes. This time, we have lots of reprints, awesome callbacks, Historic Spells and the new Enchantment mechanics: Sagas.

An Introduction to 1v1 Commander

Constructedvon JaminK (2018-04-18)

1v1 Commander is a relatively new format originally introduced last year on Magic Online. The format is built on interesting decks and allows you to play with many different cards from Magic’s past. If any of this appeals to you, I have what you need to get started in this format.

The Mage-Ring Bully Pulpit: Modern's Big Linearity Problem

Constructedvon HansD (2018-04-12)

Modern is in a healthy state … Or is it? In this week's Mage-Ring Bully Pulpit, Hans analyzes and discusses what the swaths of linear decks mean for the Modern format, why this might be a problem, and finally some solutions that might help bring more interactive decks to the forefront of Modern.

Bloodbraid Elf: Proving Its Weight in Modern

Constructedvon HansD (2018-04-06)

It’s been almost two months since Bloodbraid Elf came off the ban list, and we’ve seen a wide variety of lists running the four-drop. In this week’s article, Hans ponders the effect Bloodbraid Elf has had on Modern and compiles a compendium of recent deck lists playing the elf!

What the Four Best Decks from GP Phoenix Say about Modern

Event-Coveragevon HansD (2018-03-28)

GP Phoenix gave us an insight into how the meta has shaped up after the unbanning of Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Bloodbraid Elf. Hans looks at what he considers the four best decks from the tournament and discusses what kind of information we can wean from the results!

The Reign of Four-Drops in Modern - A Guide to Survive

Constructedvon Rone (2018-03-07)

Since the last banned announcement unchained Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Bloodbraid Elf, Modern has shaken up drastically - or has it? Although most players are brewing decks that include these cards, I've decided to make the ultimate survival guide for fighting against them.

Highlights in Bilbao: Modern at Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan

Event-Coveragevon Rone (2018-02-06)

Last weekend, the best Magic players in the world gathered in Bilbao to fight for the crown at PTRIX. After two years without a Modern Pro Tour, everyone was excited to see if the Pros could shake up the format and bring new strategies and cards from recent sets. Here are the tournament highlights.

Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan: Just What the Doctor Ordered

Financevon DrHoeh (2018-02-06)

Following a Pro Tour most players buy the cards they need to play the hot new decks, but that isn't what you should be doing to be financially efficient. The day after the Pro Tour is in fact the day to sell all the cards which you correctly identified as the future hotness way before the Pro Tour.

A Case Study on the Fall of Bant Eldrazi

Constructedvon HansD (2018-02-02)

Modern evolves as new cards enter the format, broken enablers are banned, and archetypes are discovered through off-the-wall experimentation. What used to be a tier-one archetype can in a few months be outclassed, outdated, and outmatched by the new hotness. Bant Eldrazi is one such archetype that now finds itself looking in from the outside of a format it once used to rule. How did this powerful deck manage to quickly fall from the top of the pile?
