M21 Spotlight: Conspicuous Snoop

Spoilervon ElonThragtusk (2020-06-18)

Thanks to Modern Horizons and Core Set 2020, Vial Goblins has become an option in Modern, albeit with no major success so far. That may soon change, however, as Core Set 2021 provides us with a Goblin that was cause for much hype already and caused an older card to spike. How about a combo kill on turn three?

Yorion, Sky Nomad Rises in Modern

Constructedvon Rone (2020-05-25)

"Come slide down rainbows in the sky, let's fly away. Like a bird, you're free to see the boundless face of the earth. Let the wind blow you like a kite and glide away." This is what it feels like to try Yorion in Modern, where the sky is the limit and all your wishes come true by playing an 80-card deck.

Piercing Prey in Modern with Gruul Obosh

Constructedvon ElonThragtusk (2020-05-18)

Every time Ponza, the red-green posterboy of Modern, becomes viable, it disappears again rather quickly. Despite its upsides, it often struggles to close the game, while the prevalence of Astrolabe isn't helping either. Against all odds, it enjoyed a glorious return to the spotlight recently, thanks to Ikoria.

Ikoria Spotlight: Vivien, Monsters' Advocate

Spoilervon Rone (2020-04-14)

In case you missed it, the biggest monsters of all time are waiting for you in the next Magic set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. If you need someone's advice facing them, Vivien Reid is the perfect companion for this journey. Today we are reviewing the main protagonist's new card and its future applications.

Commander Deck Tech: Dissent in the Land

Constructedvon RJGiel (2019-12-02)

Today, we look at a Lands deck, but one that doesn't revolve around the popular commanders that we see everybody using in this context: no Omnath, no Mina and Denn, no Gitrog Monster. Today we turn to an unexpected commander for a Lands strategy. Welcome to Samut Lands.

Identifying Commander Decks: It's Easy as ABC

Constructedvon RJGiel (2019-05-20)

Let's look at the wild wild west that is Commander with its infinite ways to build Commander decks, but only certain ways to fit specific playgroups and play styles. What decks are considered "casual" and what makes a deck competitive?

War of the Spark Modern Review - My Top Picks

Constructedvon Rone (2019-05-13)

Nicol Bolas has returned to end all our beloved Gatewatch heroes! It doesn't matter who wins this war though, since we Modern players still get a lot of new planeswalkers to try out. In this article, let me try to evaluate every War of the Spark card that might be Modern material.

Should This Be Banned - Part 4

Constructedvon RJGiel (2019-04-25)

Welcome back to Should This Be Banned. Last time we looked at cards that win the game with little to no effort. This article is probably the most exciting piece; looking at potential additions to the banlist! Keep in mind that this is a highly opinionated article and that I encourage you to discuss these cards and others in the comments.

Tribal Attractions: Ooze Confidence

Constructedvon Kumagoro (2019-02-27)

Sometimes it's cool to build a deck around a small tribe that doesn't invite linear strategies – something that was actually true of Ooze until Ravnica Allegiance changed their slimy game for good.

Inner Workings: Saheeli Evolution

Constructedvon Kumagoro (2018-09-20)

In each installment of the Inner Workings series, we'll examine a different Modern archetype to find out what makes it tick. This time, it's the turn of a different kind of toolbox deck, featuring the relocation to Modern of the infinite creatures combo that broke Standard last year.

Storming Off in Prague

Event-Coveragevon Andifeated (2018-09-06)

The Modern Metagame is in a constant state of change these days. A few months ago, Andifeated thought his pet deck U/R Gifts Storm has been pushed out of the top decks because of an abysmal Humans matchup, but the tides have changed again. Follow him through his deck choice process and tournament for Grand Prix Prague.

Inner Workings: Creatures Toolbox

Constructedvon Kumagoro (2018-05-25)

In each installment of the Inner Workings series, we’ll examine a different Modern archetype to find out what makes it tick. This time, it’s the turn of Creatures Toolbox, the only true heir of Pod decks, continuing a long tradition of creature-based combo builds capable of finding an answer to anything.

Unterhaltungvon Kumagoro (2018-05-04)

Taking our cue from Dominaria’s legendary theme, we keep exploring the past of the controversial supertype, entering the era of the Modern border, the Kamigawa explosion, and all the other legends that populated the sets from the second decade of Magic’s history.

Dominaria Set Review for Modern

Spoilervon Rone (2018-04-24)

Dominaria's release is on the horizon and that means once thing for Modern players: time to brew decks and figure out which cards help which archetypes. This time, we have lots of reprints, awesome callbacks, Historic Spells and the new Enchantment mechanics: Sagas.

Dont Bore Us - Spicing up Boros Archetypes in Cube

Limitedvon SanchoN (2018-04-06)

Boros is often typecast for the role as an all-out fast and wide attacker in cubes. In this installment of Cube for Squares we first take a look at the traditional Boros part of the passionate fighter in some of its already thoroughly examined variants. Afterwards we ask if there’s room for the old action hero to widen its repertoire and try out characters more often played by other guilds.

Dangerous Propositions: Birthing Pod

Constructedvon Kumagoro (2018-03-28)

The Modern ban list is a maximum-security prison with 33 inmates, some of which pose a potentially serious threat to the meta. But now that Big Jace has been released, anything can happen. I'll cover each offender in its own article to see who is eligible for parole, starting with the godmother of interactive combo decks.

The 5 Most Successful Modern Combos That Are Still Legal

Constructedvon Kumagoro (2018-02-20)

As far as Eternal formats go, Modern is certainly not as combo-heavy as formats like Vintage or Legacy, but it’s still got its fair share of wicked endgame interactions. This article discusses the top five combos that continue to have a considerable impact on the Modern meta.
