A Look at the Top 16 Modern Decks from Cardmarket Series Barcelona

Event CoverageBy TobiH (2019-10-04)

As usual, the Modern field at the most recent stop of the Cardmarket Series was the most diverse. The Top 16 featured no less than 15 different archetypes! Let's take a look at the best of what the format has to offer now, after the departure of Hogaak and Faithless Looting plus the addition of Stoneforge Mystic.

Utility Lands You Should be Playing

ConstructedBy RJGiel (2019-07-30)

One of the great things about Commander is that you can run utility lands; lands that do something besides tapping for mana. Today, Robert wants to take a look at some of the greatest potential inclusions.

The Future of Dark Confidant and Modern Jund

EntertainmentBy HansD (2019-07-25)

Midrange decks are built with the metagame in mind and are thus highly customizable. Regardless, even the most customizable of these decks still play core cards that are integral to the deck’s gameplan. Very rarely, in a non-rotating format such as Modern, does a new card come along that displaces the current best-in-slot card for a midrange deck. With the printing of Wrenn and Six in Modern Horizons, I believe that Dark Confidant has found himself as the odd man out after years of being a Jund mainstay.

A Tale of Four WAR Oathbreakers

ConstructedBy RyanS (2019-07-01)

Do you play Oathbreaker? Here are four deck techs featuring planeswalkers from the new set War of the Sparks. Ryan Scicluna breaks down four decks for this exciting new format. The decks include: Vraska and her deathtouch squad, all the Ajani’s we can fit, hand disruption with Davriel and spell slinging with Ral Zarek.

Taking a Second Look at Modern Jund

ConstructedBy HansD (2019-06-25)

Modern has changed in the five years I’ve been playing and following it, and some decks that used to be on top of the dogpile have found themselves kicked off their perch. As Modern has become more powerful, aggressive, and linear, many of the fair, interactive decks that reigned supreme have gone the way of the dinosaur. Jund is one of these decks that has been pushed out more and more by the changes in the metagame, but Modern Horizons has brought along a good number of new toys that warrant giving this battered archetype a second chance.

Proliferating with War of the Spark

ConstructedBy JaminK (2019-04-26)

Planeswalkers are not the only big mechanic in War of the Spark. Proliferate is also making a huge comeback with multiple great enablers. Jamin takes a look at a potential Modern deck that can utilize these new tools.

#TwitterBuildsModern Episode Two: The Drudge of Dredge!

EntertainmentBy JohnnyCroat (2019-03-29)

Graveyard decks come in many shapes and sizes. There's Living End, which is usually brought back out for a spin every time some new cool ETB effects get printed. UB Storm is in effect a graveyard deck, relying on Past in Flames in order to be able to recycle a big heap of cheap cantrips so as to generate massive card advantage and storm count. There's Dredge itself, happy to dump as many cards into the bin as possible, and then cheating several itty bitty bothersome monsters into play, which have a tendency to come back turn after turn after turn. So then, how does this relate to Maze's End? Read on!

#TwitterBuildsModern Episode One: Prison Break!

ConstructedBy JohnnyCroat (2019-03-01)

When building a deck with a clear win-condition in mind, it's important to look at the ways that this can be achieved. When that win-condition will take far more turns than is usual in the format, then we need to look at ways to give us that time! Let's build a pillow fort with Maze's End!

Dangerous Propositions: Dark Depths

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2019-02-19)

The Modern ban list is a maximum security prison with (KCI update!) 34 inmates, some of which could potentially pose a serious threat to the meta. In this ongoing series, we're reviewing each of those offenders to see if they're eligible for parole. This time it's the turn of the evil queen of the tokens.

Five Reasons to Play Tron In Modern

ConstructedBy ChristopherB (2019-02-07)

Tron is one of the most polarizing decks in Modern. Player either love (and play) this deck or hate it. But is Tron well positioned in the meta right now? I believe so and I will tell you why 1+1+1=7 is so good.

Define This: Tempo

ConstructedBy Moudou (2019-02-01)

In the current set of chapters on Define This, we are going into more specific notions of the vocabulary. While some words are easy to define, some have a sturdy theoretical background, or are simply not easy to describe as such. After going through CA and tiebreakers, let's work on a notion that isn't properly defined: tempo.

Foresight for Commander - A Budget Sphinx Tribal Commander Deck

ConstructedBy RyanS (2019-01-30)

Ravnica Allegiance introduces a new sphinx with a powerful ability. Sphinx of Foresight allows you to scry 1 at the beginning of each of your upkeep. Furthermore, if Sphinx of Foresight is in your opening hand, you can reveal it to scry 3 during your first upkeep. Can these abilities make Sphinx of Foresight good in the commander format?

Behind the Tag - Deck Stories Part 2

EntertainmentBy ChristopherB (2019-01-16)

Have you ever asked yourself why a deck with three Urza lands is called Tron? Why is a Mono Blue Combo Deck named after a card that has never been a part of it? Read more about the stories of four decks in the second part of Behind the Tag.

Dangerous Propositions: Punishing Fire

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2018-11-14)

The Modern ban list is a maximum-security prison with 33 inmates, some of which pose a potentially serious threat to the meta. But now that Big Jace is free, anything can happen. Let's review each of the offenders to see if they're eligible for parole. This time, we talk of the burn spell that won't stay away.

My Guilds of Ravnica Picks for Modern

ConstructedBy Rone (2018-10-10)

We are right at the start of Guilds of Ravnica. Everyone is brewing new Standard decks while prices are going up and down. In this article, Rone tries to predict which cards are Modern material. Let's jump into it.

The Post-GP Prague Metagame Breakdown

Event CoverageBy HansD (2018-09-05)

Although the European Modern scene leans toward control more than its American counterpart, the numbers that W/U Control put up at GP Prague came as an eye-opener for someone like me who expected things to be a lot more linear. Regardless, I want to take a look at the archetype's performance, examine an up-and-comer from the tournament, and wrap things up with a look towards the future. Without further ado, let's jump right into the deck of the hour, W/U Control.

Christian has played Magic for a long time now. Last time, he covered his favorites from Standard. Here, he's looking at Modern and Extended. Read on to find out his personal favorites, from metal men to titans of Magic history.

Inner Workings: Bloomless Titan

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2018-08-24)

In each installment of the Inner Workings series, we'll examine a different Modern archetype to find out what makes it tick. This time, it's the turn of Bloomless Titan, the heir of the explosive ramp deck that used to perform a grand juggling act with bounce lands, Amulets and Titans.

Inner Workings: Creatures Toolbox

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2018-05-25)

In each installment of the Inner Workings series, we’ll examine a different Modern archetype to find out what makes it tick. This time, it’s the turn of Creatures Toolbox, the only true heir of Pod decks, continuing a long tradition of creature-based combo builds capable of finding an answer to anything.

How to Beat MUD: A Vintage Tier 1 Deck for 15 Years

ConstructedBy Elric (2018-05-23)

Most archetypes in Vintage Magic have defining cards which have not changed over the years. MUD, however, has changed entirely, yet it remains as one of the decks to beat. Why is that so and how can this deck be beaten?

Budget Decks to Get into Modern

ConstructedBy HansD (2018-05-16)

Modern can be pricey, and it’s not easy to figure out the right way to find an entry point into the format. While there’s plenty of resources about the topic on the Internet, I wanted to write this article to give a perspective about the topic of getting into Modern on a budget as another resource for those of you that find yourself in this position. I hope that you’ll find it helpful as you begin your Modern journey!

Choose Their Poison: The Collective Brutality Story

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2018-04-11)

Modal spells - everyone's favorite way to pack a bigger bang for your buck while dealing with the inherent available slot restrictions in 60-card decks. The best of such cards were frequently chase rares in the past and Collective Brutality is no exception; let’s choose to see why.

Bloodbraid Elf: Proving Its Weight in Modern

ConstructedBy HansD (2018-04-06)

It’s been almost two months since Bloodbraid Elf came off the ban list, and we’ve seen a wide variety of lists running the four-drop. In this week’s article, Hans ponders the effect Bloodbraid Elf has had on Modern and compiles a compendium of recent deck lists playing the elf!

5 Dragons You Might Meet on the Battlefield

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2018-03-23)

Dracarys! Despite their typical casting cost being midrange and beyond, Dragons always find a way to show up in decks of all kinds. Their current situation across the formats is not too shabby, and not just in red-based builds. Here’s a selection of the flying terrors all the cool kids are playing.

Zero Thrill: The Pact of Negation Story

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2018-03-14)

Were Force of Will available in Modern, the format would be dramatically altered. And yet, Modern does already contain a piece of non-conditional zero-cost countermagic, and while it's not played as much as Vintage and Legacy's signature counterspell, it's been tentatively around since Modern's early days.

One More Thing! A Second Look at Legacy Miracles

ConstructedBy Alakazimdk (2018-03-13)

I ran the Mentor build in the MTGO Legacy Challenge this week and I feel that is a good opportunity to showcase a slightly different way to build Miracles than we saw last time. I'll go through the list and then my rounds.

The Reign of Four-Drops in Modern - A Guide to Survive

ConstructedBy Rone (2018-03-07)

Since the last banned announcement unchained Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Bloodbraid Elf, Modern has shaken up drastically - or has it? Although most players are brewing decks that include these cards, I've decided to make the ultimate survival guide for fighting against them.

Getting the Most Out of Your Lands - A Guide to Mono-Green Tron

ConstructedBy Toffel (2018-02-23)

With four copies in the top 8 of GP Lyon last weekend, Tron is back and, although everybody is gunning for those powerful Urza-lands, the deck keeps finding ways through the hate. Will Bloodbraid Elf or Jace change that? This article answers this question and explains the strategy for Mono-Green Tron

BW Soul Sisters: No Grey Areas

ConstructedBy JohnnyCroat (2018-02-08)

Modern is a wonderfully vibrant format currently, with each new set seeing new decks and archetype variants getting more than a few plays online. Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan saw 5 Colour Humans as its most popular deck, with two such builds making it as far as the Top 8. But, once upon a time, there was a popular mono-White Humans deck: Soul Sisters. Does this deck still have legs? Or has its time passed?

Highlights in Bilbao: Modern at Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan

Event CoverageBy Rone (2018-02-06)

Last weekend, the best Magic players in the world gathered in Bilbao to fight for the crown at PTRIX. After two years without a Modern Pro Tour, everyone was excited to see if the Pros could shake up the format and bring new strategies and cards from recent sets. Here are the tournament highlights.

A Case Study on the Fall of Bant Eldrazi

ConstructedBy HansD (2018-02-02)

Modern evolves as new cards enter the format, broken enablers are banned, and archetypes are discovered through off-the-wall experimentation. What used to be a tier-one archetype can in a few months be outclassed, outdated, and outmatched by the new hotness. Bant Eldrazi is one such archetype that now finds itself looking in from the outside of a format it once used to rule. How did this powerful deck manage to quickly fall from the top of the pile?

Notes from the Battlefield: Modern at MKMS Frankfurt 2018

Event CoverageBy TobiH (2018-02-02)

Time to take a look back at the Modern main event of the 2018 MKM Series Frankfurt! With 613 players, this tournament provided more stories than we could ever hope to fit into the official event coverage. There's still a lot to be said about several noteworthy players and their equally noteworthy decks!

Back to Basic Lands: Mono Color Decks in Modern

ConstructedBy Rone (2018-01-31)

Starting over in Magic is always difficult, especially Eternal formats where there is no rotation, and card staples tend to be expensive. Fortunately, there are some budget archetypes that allow you to start playing Modern and then evolve into a tier deck. Today, we are going to break down some mono color decks for Modern.

My Legacy Picks for Team Trios Constructed GPs

Event CoverageBy Alakazimdk (2018-01-23)

This article will try to give you and your team some options for the Legacy component of upcoming Team Constructed events. I’ll give each deck two scores, the first for experienced Legacy players and the second for players who are not as familiar with Legacy as a format. As with all Legacy lists, expect a high learning curve in a format with Wastelands, Brainstorms, and consistent turn 2-3 combo kills.
