New Modern Yawgmoth Tech

By K_Prinz (2021-06-22)

Yawgmoth has been a player in Modern for quite some time. Now, thanks to Modern Horizons 2, it's about time to come a-calling for a doctor's appointment in Ivy Lane, where the roots grow weak and the oaks grow strong. What better physician to deliver a message than one whose patients never die?

An Actual Tribal Squirrel Deck in Modern

By Kumagoro (2021-06-14)

Mark Rosewater has won yet another uphill battle. One of his many pet projects, the reintroduction of Squirrels in black-bordered Magic, has crossed a crucial milestone with the printing of twelve new cards in Modern Horizons 2. Now Modern has become fertile terrain for the woodland critters to conquer.

Chain of Smog Combo: Witherbloom Rules Legacy

By Rone (2021-05-24)

During Strixhaven preview season, the almost forgotten Chain of Smog rose to new prominence and a new price point. Belittled as a purely theoretical gimmick, the combo with magecraft has since been able to prove its mettle in Legacy, in a variety of shells, alongside Witherbloom Apprentice.

Three Modern Decks to Play After the Bans

By ElonThragtusk (2021-02-23)

Last week, five more cards have been banned from Modern in one of the biggest announcements in recent memory. This caused quite a stir, killing some strategies and making others (even) better. Which decks can we expect to see rise to the top now? We can quickly come up with at least three!

Elves Making a Comeback with Kaldheim

By ElonThragtusk (2021-02-22)

With Kaldheim giving us so many new Elves, it's no surprise how everybody thought the tribe was finally making a big return. However, it's been out of the meta for so long that everyone lost count. It would probably take a miracle … Are the new cards, together with the most recent bans, just that?

Kaldheim Spotlight: Valki // Tibalt

By Rone (2021-01-18)

With Kaldheim, the snowiest plane of all, Tibalt returns to Magic history—and to make history himself. Disguised as Valki, the God of mischief, trickery, and lies, he makes for the first ever modal double-faced card showcasing a creature/planeswalker, ready to boost every Rakdos archetype across all formats.

The New Modern Silliness: Hammertime, Obosh, Oh Boy!

By ElonThragtusk (2021-01-13)

2020 was a crazy year for Modern. With so many powerful cards making their debut, it's no wonder the metagame still tends to change so rapidly and so seriously. The last two or three months alone have brought us at least two completely new decks, and another one has made a sudden resurgence.

Kaldheim Spotlight: Pyre of Heroes

By Kumagoro (2021-01-11)

When Birthing Pod was banned five years ago, Modern lost its most powerful search engine. Throughout the years, several cards have tried to revive the thrill of those glorious activations, but none of them got closer to that promise than Kaldheim's Pyre of Heroes—tribal angle be damned.

Kaldheim Spotlight: Sarulf, Realm Eater

By ElonThragtusk (2021-01-06)

The preview season for Kaldheim started out slow, so it's not surprising that Sarulf is one of the most discussed cards so far. Its abilities are very powerful in theory, but both its power level and its playability are hard to evaluate. This happens to make us want to dive into the topic of Realm Eating even more!

The New Scourge of Modern

By ElonThragtusk (2020-10-07)

Scourge of the Skyclaves is one of those cards that look busted at first glance but require extensive testing before it is possible to reach any definite conclusion. Now, a few weeks after the release of Zendikar Rising, we have the results and can definitely say that the verdict is in.

Updating Modern Jund

By Andifeated (2020-04-03)

Theros Beyond Death impacted a lot of nonrotating formats with broken combo cards like Thassa's Oracle and Underworld Breach. But not only did the unfair strategies get new power-creep toys — the Titan duo of Uro and Kroxa changed the faces of many midrange decks as well. Let's see what Jund gets out of that!

The year just started and Theros Beyond Death is available to purchase. However, there is so much more out there to invest in. Rone has compiled his personal list of the Top 5 cards you should consider buying this month, with highlights from almost all Constructed formats.

Why You Too Should Play European Highlander

By Ratix (2020-01-06)

Before Commander caught on, players had already been enjoying a singleton format for years. It was named Highlander — originally for the catchphrase of the 1986 cult classic which stipulates that "There can be only one," but the format also seems to want to live forever.

Spicy Decks from Mythic Championship IV

By Rone (2019-08-30)

Modern is a new format after the recent banning and unbanning. People are looking to brew tons of new decks, but Rone decided instead to look back at Mythic Championship IV Barcelona. Sure, the decks were tuned for Hogaak, but maybe there were some gems that you could adapt in the new Modern.

Jamin's First Grand Prix Top 8

By JaminK (2019-08-27)

Jamin played a total of 33 Grand Prix before getting a Top 8 finish. But last weekend, his time had come and he crushed the competition using the recently banned Modern menace that is Hogaak. Join him in telling weird stories about an 8/8 trample that isn’t Hogaak, 13 card sideboards, and a minor laziness incident that ended up costing him.

The Future of Dark Confidant and Modern Jund

By HansD (2019-07-25)

Midrange decks are built with the metagame in mind and are thus highly customizable. Regardless, even the most customizable of these decks still play core cards that are integral to the deck’s gameplan. Very rarely, in a non-rotating format such as Modern, does a new card come along that displaces the current best-in-slot card for a midrange deck. With the printing of Wrenn and Six in Modern Horizons, I believe that Dark Confidant has found himself as the odd man out after years of being a Jund mainstay.

Taking a Second Look at Modern Jund

By HansD (2019-06-25)

Modern has changed in the five years I’ve been playing and following it, and some decks that used to be on top of the dogpile have found themselves kicked off their perch. As Modern has become more powerful, aggressive, and linear, many of the fair, interactive decks that reigned supreme have gone the way of the dinosaur. Jund is one of these decks that has been pushed out more and more by the changes in the metagame, but Modern Horizons has brought along a good number of new toys that warrant giving this battered archetype a second chance.
