Ramp and Let Die: Budget Fastbond in Vintage

ConstructedBy Dr-Exhume (2020-06-29)

Vintage can be fun and relatively cheap? Is that true? Indeed, you can build a pair of Vintage decks for less than many Modern decks and you can even steal some games with them. Let's take a look at two Fastbond shells and revisit a couple of common misconceptions about Magic's oldest format.

An Ultimatum to the Meta

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2020-06-09)

Standard has been weird for a while. Overpowered cards and mechanics have given birth to a number of top decks, whose diversity never mitigated their marked superiority. Now bans and the companion nerf have reset the field, but the dust hasn't settled yet, so it might be the best time to try something fun!

Yorion, Sky Nomad Rises in Modern

ConstructedBy Rone (2020-05-25)

"Come slide down rainbows in the sky, let's fly away. Like a bird, you're free to see the boundless face of the earth. Let the wind blow you like a kite and glide away." This is what it feels like to try Yorion in Modern, where the sky is the limit and all your wishes come true by playing an 80-card deck.

Yorion, a Nomad Mad for Standard

ConstructedBy BrentT (2020-04-30)

When companions were initially released, Yorion, Sky Nomad sort of flew under the radar because obviously busted Lurrus and Gyruda claimed the spotlight first. But the Standard metagame moves fast and now we're seeing Yorion variants rise to the top. Let's take a look at a couple of decks running an extra twenty cards.

Updating Modern Jund

ConstructedBy Andifeated (2020-04-03)

Theros Beyond Death impacted a lot of nonrotating formats with broken combo cards like Thassa's Oracle and Underworld Breach. But not only did the unfair strategies get new power-creep toys — the Titan duo of Uro and Kroxa changed the faces of many midrange decks as well. Let's see what Jund gets out of that!

The Good, the Bad, and the Underrated: A Lhurgoyf Tribute

EntertainmentBy Dr-Exhume (2020-03-25)

"Ach! Hans, run! It's the Lhurgoyf!" The sound of these words is smoother than any other flavor text to my ears. With this article I want to pay tribute to a creature tribe that many people know best for its poster child, the Tarmogoyf. But let us not forget about its relatives.

Why You Too Should Play European Highlander

ConstructedBy Ratix (2020-01-06)

Before Commander caught on, players had already been enjoying a singleton format for years. It was named Highlander — originally for the catchphrase of the 1986 cult classic which stipulates that "There can be only one," but the format also seems to want to live forever.

Tribal Attractions: Standard Wolves

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2019-12-16)

Not just Knights. The tribal options in Standard are more varied than meets the eye, and a ferocious pack of canines is one of the most entertaining to assemble, with all those apex predators, as well as their off-tribe and planeswalking friends, eager to answer your call and begin their wild hunt.

Mythic Championship VII: Cat Out of the Bag

Event CoverageBy Kumagoro (2019-12-13)

The final entry in the Mythic Championship series, as well as the last big professional event of the year, presented a reasonably varied Standard metagame. Though there were more than a few twists as well as a couple notable absentees.

Cardmarket Series Prague featured a brand new Standard format once again. While Oko was out, the oven was still burning with the fire of invention. What is Dead May Never Die: Modern Dredge After Faithless Looting

When Hogaak Summer concluded with a big Banned and Restricted List announcement, many decks were hurt by the removal of Faithless Looting—especially graveyard strategies like Dredge. Learn how they survive the loss of their most important turn-one play and what direction Modern takes from here.

Adventure Decks in Standard

Rone does so by singing the praises of each archetype it helped enable, while discussing the futures of these archetypes in a post-looting world. This time, Rone covers the big three - Izzet Phoenix, Dredge, and the Hogaak Menace itself.

Jamin's First Grand Prix Top 8

Event CoverageBy JaminK (2019-08-27)

Jamin played a total of 33 Grand Prix before getting a Top 8 finish. But last weekend, his time had come and he crushed the competition using the recently banned Modern menace that is Hogaak. Join him in telling weird stories about an 8/8 trample that isn’t Hogaak, 13 card sideboards, and a minor laziness incident that ended up costing him.

FinanceBy JaminK (2019-07-31)

The Future of Dark Confidant and Modern Jund

EntertainmentBy HansD (2019-07-25)

Midrange decks are built with the metagame in mind and are thus highly customizable. Regardless, even the most customizable of these decks still play core cards that are integral to the deck’s gameplan. Very rarely, in a non-rotating format such as Modern, does a new card come along that displaces the current best-in-slot card for a midrange deck. With the printing of Wrenn and Six in Modern Horizons, I believe that Dark Confidant has found himself as the odd man out after years of being a Jund mainstay.

A Tale of Four WAR Oathbreakers

ConstructedBy RyanS (2019-07-01)

Taking a Second Look at Modern Jund

ConstructedBy HansD (2019-06-25)

Modern has changed in the five years I’ve been playing and following it, and some decks that used to be on top of the dogpile have found themselves kicked off their perch. As Modern has become more powerful, aggressive, and linear, many of the fair, interactive decks that reigned supreme have gone the way of the dinosaur. Jund is one of these decks that has been pushed out more and more by the changes in the metagame, but Modern Horizons has brought along a good number of new toys that warrant giving this battered archetype a second chance.

Bridgevine's Missing Piece

ConstructedBy Andifeated (2019-06-13)

It was obvious that Modern Horizons would introduce some cards to the Modern metagame to help fringe strategies push their way into the meta. Nobody expected the monster that Wizards would unleash with Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis. Read about Bridgevine's rise from fringe status to potentially format defining.

5 Exciting Build-Arounds from War of the Spark

SpoilersBy HansD (2019-04-30)

Standard has been experiencing a renaissance the past few sets, and War of the Spark looks to continue that trend. One of the most exciting aspects of Standard is that it has been a brewer's paradise, with off-meta decks such as Chromatic Black, Bant Vannifar, Five-Color Guildgates, and more proving the existence of creative deckbuilding in the format. Looking through the spoilers for WAR has shown that this set, more than any other in recent memory, is chock-full of build-arounds that could provide the building blocks for new archetypes. Let's jump right in and look at the five most exciting build-arounds I've found from the new set!

#TwitterBuildsModern Episode Two: The Drudge of Dredge!

EntertainmentBy JohnnyCroat (2019-03-29)

Graveyard decks come in many shapes and sizes. There's Living End, which is usually brought back out for a spin every time some new cool ETB effects get printed. UB Storm is in effect a graveyard deck, relying on Past in Flames in order to be able to recycle a big heap of cheap cantrips so as to generate massive card advantage and storm count. There's Dredge itself, happy to dump as many cards into the bin as possible, and then cheating several itty bitty bothersome monsters into play, which have a tendency to come back turn after turn after turn. So then, how does this relate to Maze's End? Read on!

It's All About Prime Speaker Vannifar

ConstructedBy HansD (2019-03-19)

To say that Standard is thriving would be an understatement. With a multitude of fully-viable build-around cards and a deep pool of supporting cards, this Standard might be one of the most diverse Standards in the history of Magic. Brewers all over the Internet have been sharing new and exciting lists every week, it seems, and the card I want to focus on today is a "fixed" version of a card that's banned in Modern: Prime Speaker Vannifar.

The Winners and Losers of the First Mythic Championship

Event CoverageBy HansD (2019-02-26)

Like any major tournament, there were winner and losers, and Hans is here to take the time this week to go over the cards and decks that left an impression. Some were good, some were bad, but they were all meaningful, so check out his findings below!
