Updating Modern Jund

ConstructedBy Andifeated (2020-04-03)

Theros Beyond Death impacted a lot of nonrotating formats with broken combo cards like Thassa's Oracle and Underworld Breach. But not only did the unfair strategies get new power-creep toys — the Titan duo of Uro and Kroxa changed the faces of many midrange decks as well. Let's see what Jund gets out of that!

Why You Too Should Play European Highlander

ConstructedBy Ratix (2020-01-06)

Before Commander caught on, players had already been enjoying a singleton format for years. It was named Highlander — originally for the catchphrase of the 1986 cult classic which stipulates that "There can be only one," but the format also seems to want to live forever.

Pioneer at Cardmarket Series Prague

Event CoverageBy TobiH (2019-12-06)

Pioneer wasn't one of the big headliners in Prague, and the event's turnout wasn't big either. The format also experienced another round of bannings since. Nevertheless, the results call into question some previous assumptions. In particular, control fared much better than expected.

ConstructedBy Andifeated (2019-11-13)

Legacy is a tough format to enter for new players as the top tier demands expensive cards. But now there's a cheap rogue strategy that preys on current top decks revolving around Wrenn and Six and Oko. Learn how to build and pilot Manaless Dredge and what makes it good today!

The Art of Building a Legacy Deck

ConstructedBy CabalTherapy (2019-10-30)

Legacy has always been a playground for innovators. However, one does not need to reinvent the wheel to build a proper Legacy deck. In fact, it's often impossible to do. Instead, just as with most formats, it's more about working within an established framework.

What is Dead May Never Die: Modern Dredge After Faithless Looting

ConstructedBy Andifeated (2019-10-21)

When Hogaak Summer concluded with a big Banned and Restricted List announcement, many decks were hurt by the removal of Faithless Looting—especially graveyard strategies like Dredge. Learn how they survive the loss of their most important turn-one play and what direction Modern takes from here.

Spicy Decks from Mythic Championship IV

ConstructedBy Rone (2019-08-30)

Modern is a new format after the recent banning and unbanning. People are looking to brew tons of new decks, but Rone decided instead to look back at Mythic Championship IV Barcelona. Sure, the decks were tuned for Hogaak, but maybe there were some gems that you could adapt in the new Modern.

Rotation Grief: Ixalan (Part 2)

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2019-08-28)

The Standard Rotation looms closer with each passing day. How the meta will change, at first, will be a direct consequence of the disappearance of four rotating sets. We continue this journey of grief (or jubilation, depending on who you ask) by looking at the red, green, multicolored, and colorless cards we'll have to remove when Ixalan rotates.

Legacy Treasures 2: 4c Waterfalls

ConstructedBy CabalTherapy (2019-08-12)

CabalTherapy is back tapping into some of the less known, but still great decks in Legacy. This time it's the "real" cascade deck: 4c Waterfalls. It's great and it's time it gets its time in the sunshine. Joing him as he gives you a snapshot of this oldie but goodie.

The Future of Dark Confidant and Modern Jund

EntertainmentBy HansD (2019-07-25)

Midrange decks are built with the metagame in mind and are thus highly customizable. Regardless, even the most customizable of these decks still play core cards that are integral to the deck’s gameplan. Very rarely, in a non-rotating format such as Modern, does a new card come along that displaces the current best-in-slot card for a midrange deck. With the printing of Wrenn and Six in Modern Horizons, I believe that Dark Confidant has found himself as the odd man out after years of being a Jund mainstay.

Taking a Second Look at Modern Jund

ConstructedBy HansD (2019-06-25)

Modern has changed in the five years I’ve been playing and following it, and some decks that used to be on top of the dogpile have found themselves kicked off their perch. As Modern has become more powerful, aggressive, and linear, many of the fair, interactive decks that reigned supreme have gone the way of the dinosaur. Jund is one of these decks that has been pushed out more and more by the changes in the metagame, but Modern Horizons has brought along a good number of new toys that warrant giving this battered archetype a second chance.

#CMWhatTheTrend - Giver of Runes

FinanceBy JaminK (2019-06-19)

Hello and welcome to WhatTheTrend, the column where we'll examine current trends on Cardmarket, check out why certain cards are popular, and speculate on future price developments. This week, we'll be discussing Giver of Runes. She was often compared to her Legacy Mother and was thus quickly dismissed – but they fill completely different roles!

It's All About Prime Speaker Vannifar

ConstructedBy HansD (2019-03-19)

To say that Standard is thriving would be an understatement. With a multitude of fully-viable build-around cards and a deep pool of supporting cards, this Standard might be one of the most diverse Standards in the history of Magic. Brewers all over the Internet have been sharing new and exciting lists every week, it seems, and the card I want to focus on today is a "fixed" version of a card that's banned in Modern: Prime Speaker Vannifar.

Tribal Attractions: Ooze Confidence

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2019-02-27)

Sometimes it's cool to build a deck around a small tribe that doesn't invite linear strategies – something that was actually true of Ooze until Ravnica Allegiance changed their slimy game for good.

Dangerous Propositions: Dark Depths

ConstructedBy Kumagoro (2019-02-19)

The Modern ban list is a maximum security prison with (KCI update!) 34 inmates, some of which could potentially pose a serious threat to the meta. In this ongoing series, we're reviewing each of those offenders to see if they're eligible for parole. This time it's the turn of the evil queen of the tokens.

Will Vintage Players Survive Survival Aggro

A combination of Bazaar of Baghdad and Survival of the Fittest with the raw power of Hollow Ones and Vengevines has given birth to a new aggro deck that may be funny to play but is very consistent.

Let's review each of the offenders to see if they're eligible for parole. This time, we talk of the burn spell that won't stay away.

Rather Exhumed: Coming Down from the Grave

ConstructedBy Rone (2018-11-09)

"Graveyard matters" cards are a key element in the Modern metagame. With Dredge on the rise due to Creeping Chill, we need to re-evaluate maindeck hate and how certain strategies rely on this part of the game. In today's article, Rodrigo ranks the format's tier decks based on their graveyard dependency.

Fighting the Good Fight: Goblin Guide

ConstructedBy HansD (2018-10-12)

"Fighting the Good Fight" returns with one of red's most iconic creature spells. While the card looks simple (and perhaps bad) on its surface, Goblin Guide has been an archetype staple for Modern's entire life span, and it's not a surprise to see why. Let's take a look at what makes this card so deadly and how to fight against it!

Fighting the Good Fight - Snapcaster Mage

ConstructedBy HansD (2018-08-28)

Welcome to another edition of "Fighting the Good Fight," and this past weekend's GP results couldn't have come at a better time for today's discussion of the best blue card in Modern: Snapcaster Mage. Snapcaster has been a mainstay in Modern since the format's very start, but with how well UW Control fared, we're expecting this wizard to be even more prevalent than usual. In that case, it's doubly important that we know how we can fight against one of Modern's most powerful cards!

Beating Your Opponents Down with Green-Black Elves
