Countdown til Christmas: Top 10 Magic Cards of 2018 (#4)
- Pietro Cavalletti
Cardmarket's top 10 most sold Magic: The Gathering cards of 2018 - with a Christmas twist! These cards topped our charts from 1 January to 30 November 2018 and we can't wait to share them. Here's our 4th most popular card!
Merry Christmas to the Trees
Green isn't the best, nor the flashiest
Still, your creatures are the biggest
And hey, that's Survival of the Fittest!
Only One May Rise
Forests being in the Top 10 makes sense, and this particular Forest even more so.
Art on the Un-set basics is beautiful, so it's no surprise that everyone wants them for their decks. Furthermore, no artist is better than John Avon in drawing landscapes – he's even drawn covers for Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, and Arthur C. Clark!
You probably remember the equally beautiful art on the Unhinged basics that were featured in a handful of sought-after playmats? Well, people want the same for these Unstable lands! There's even a Kickstarter launched to fund the playmats, even if they wouldn't come from WotC. These cards are harder to convert though, as the design of the cards (the Island and Forest in particular) are vertical, so it's not so easy for them to fit into a large horizontal playmat.
So, the solution, as though you haven't already guessed, was to create the first VERTICAL PLAYMATS (tapped mats), and the results are beautiful.
So... why then? Because Mono Green is viable in every format, thus, everyone needs Forests!
Just think about the amount of green decks that are running basics in Magic right now. Green, with it's plentiful ramp, is:
- the most popular color in Commander,
- you have the various B/G/x builds in Modern,
- the best deck in Standard, and
- even in Legacy and Vintage, green shows up more often than one might think. (Although Blue is still king.)
Green is probably the most versatile and synergistic color, even when played on it's own, because the strategy of playing big things and smashing is just so straightforward and easy. Quick mana sources, ramp, some tools, big monster/combo, and then a handshake.
From Elves in Legacy and Modern to various Commander builds (Nissa, Selvala, Azusa) to all the green in casual formats, Green and its Forests have seduced generations of players from old, nerdy, and beardy guys to this little lady:
What is left for me to say other than, Merry Christmas (a green holiday, btw) to all friends of the Forest!

Check out Forest, Unstable and help it top the charts next year too, if you'd like!
