The Insane Year of the Swamp

Let's look at the Standard "Decks to Beat" throughout 2018:

  • B/U Scarab God
  • R/B Aggro
  • Golgari Midrange

In Standard, at the very least, it has been the Year of the Swamp.

Black has taken a subtle yet perceptible shift in the color pie, being the color that does it all albeit in an above-average fashion: Do you need to kill a creature? How about a pesky planeswalker? Do you need to deal with a card in your opponent's hand? Do you need to maximize your board presence? Are you playing aggressive or defensive? Either way, black has you covered and is now a staple for any midrange strategy. Black may just overthrow blue as the best color in Magic: The Gathering. Plus, it's the best land art in Unstable in my opinion. No wonder it's the #6 card of 2018.

The list shows that the cards above the basics were bought heavily (considering that you need basics in significantly larger quantities than a playset normal cards)

Hellkite yes, this is a list of the top 10 most traded cards, so the five Unstable basics were bound to eat up all the slots. I personnally find it good that we have the opportunity to view the year this way, but I realize this is a personnal view.

Hellkite, alas, people want cool lands to tech out their decks, or indeed foil lands, and as such lands will always feature highly. But, maybe next year we'll look at the Top 10 non-basic land cards :)

So, if Unstable Lands counts as 5 individual cards, we have "only" 5 cards + 5 basics?
EDIT: don't get me wrong. I like lists and statistics (and I like the Un-Lands), but I hoped to see 10 individual cards. (anyways, I still enjoy this list ;)
