Countdown til Christmas: Top 10 Magic Cards of 2018 (#8)
Cardmarket's top 10 most sold Magic: The Gathering cards of 2018 - with a Christmas twist! These cards topped our charts from 1 January to 30 November 2018 and we can't wait to share them. Here's our 8th most popular card!
From the earth of the mountain
Into the earth of the mage,
There is no better feeling
Than bolting the opponent's face.
An Embodiment of Power and Ferocity
I couldn't be happier with the #8 card since we're talking about John Avon's incredibly, breath-taking Unstable Mountain.
I remember purchasing my own – early in March after GP Madrid – when I started playing Hollow One. And oh boy, how happy I was every time a fetch land was cracked to search for this awesome piece of art.
This basic land has been a top item for all red mages throughout the entire year and aside from its new card design, it's been quite dominant in competitive environments, especially in Standard. For most of 2018, the format has been crowded by Mountains thanks to a plethora of unbelievable red bombs like Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Hazoret the Fervent, or Goblin Chainwhirler, just to name a few.
Mono Red (aside from Mono Blue Tempo) is also the only monocolored deck that is putting out good results at the moment. Furthermore, red is the predominant color of Spain's flag, the country of the actual MTG World Champion, Javier Domínguez. Javier won the tournament piloting B/R Midrange, arguably the best deck from the previous Standard metagame before last September's rotation. I highly recommend you include these beautiful Mountains if you don't have them yet to build one of the cheapest yet most successful decks in Guilds of Ravnica Standard.
Aside from rotating formats, Mountains are a powerhouse in Modern where Valakut decks combo off by having five or more in play. Indeed, you will need them if you are looking to play tier decks such as Burn, Hollow One, or Mardu Pyromancer. The new Arclight Phoenix brews are also becoming quite popular.
Finally, for eternal lovers, you already know that blue is the best color in both Legacy and Vintage. But what's the best way to fight water? Obviously with fire! So cast your Pyroblasts and Red Elemental Blasts with the red mana that this Mountain provides.
Overall, 2018 has been a wonderful year for Magic: The Gathering with a mountain peak of new players entering the game thanks to organized play and Magic Arena. But we have just started climbing this mountain of success. We shall continue our mountain hike in 2019 with more Insight articles and more organized play.
Have a wonderful Christmas holidays and please tap some sweet Mountains in the meantime, whether they're snow-covered or not.
Until next year!
