Daily Dominaria Deck Tech: The Talented Commander 'Dane

Every workday while the set is new, Insight is taking a quick look at one deck featuring the latest additions from Dominaria United. The "Legends Retold" concept gives several iconic characters a well-deserved update. One of them is The Ever-Changing 'Dane, a serial killer with an identity disorder.

How far would you go to become someone else?

"No More Half Measures"

Do you remember Halfdane from the original Legends set? Me neither! However, its updated card The Ever-Changing 'Dane is an Esper commander to take note of. It can become a copy of any creature we sacrifice. Looking into the lore of this Shapeshifter, one learns of the character's psychotic urges to murder people and take their place, living their lives until the murderous urges resurface. This is quite a story and makes for a unique commander that thrives on our opponents playing powerful creatures: We steal them, get rid of them, and make our commander become a copy of them.

Not Your Average Shapeshifter Lord

Instead of filling our deck with other Shapeshifters, we can focus on theft. Blue has a plethora of cards that steal our opponents' creatures, either permanently or until end of turn. This is enough time for us to sacrifice them to our commander's effect, simultaneously dealing with a threat and creating one for ourselves. Agent of Treachery, Dragonlord Silumgar, Merieke Ri Berit, Mind Flayer, Sower of Temptation, and Thalakos Deceiver are creatures that steal others, while Domineering Will, Ray of Command, Chamber of Manipulation, and Treachery make up the spell department.

If we end up not having access to our commander, we can use other effects to take advantage of the spoils. Ritual of the Machine and Deadly Dispute allow us to sacrifice a creature or artifact to draw cards. With Phyrexian Tower and Phyrexian Altar we can trade stolen creatures for mana. Since we will be sacrificing a lot of creatures, we can also run Grave Pact to make our opponents sacrifice creatures as well.

The Deck

This is a deck with a simple strategy in mind. Its power level scales with the power level of your opponents' decks but relies heavily on exploiting creature-based strategies, which can sometimes lead to tricky games as it might struggle to close. Nonetheless, this is a fun brew that makes you feel like you are stalking prey—right until you are ready to replace them.
