Modern Mastery

Exciting times! The Modern Masters 2015 pre-sale started recently and now we heading into “spoiler” season. While there will be no new cards to be revealed, getting closer to knowing the exact content of MM15 is very valuable for us.

Click, click, click...BOOM!

Vendilion Clique will join Tarmogoyf, Karn Liberated and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn as one of the mythic rares in MM15.

Just two days ago I recommended to stay away from Clique as long as the set was not completely spoiled. Due to the plummeting price, every single copy of Vendilion Clique that you would buy today instead of during the last two days would safe you enough money for more than a month of MKM Insight access. And that is not even considering the incoming additional price reduction for the Faeries during the next few days.

What can we extrapolate from the new spoiler? First of all, whether or not something has already been reprinted in Modern Masters does not give us any clue about MM15. So far the only pattern seems to be: If it is "too expensive" on the secondary market, it will get reprinted. While that would be a very reasonable approach for Wizards (maximizing their MM15 sales and making Modern more accessible at the same time), trying to prove any pattern for the set, while just knowing five cards, is futile.

Either way, while many Modern positions might gain value in the long run, you should seriously consider emptying your inventory of the most expensive Modern cards now, re-buy the cards that end up not reprinted as soon as the “spoiler” is complete, and refill on the reprints when they bottom out. There is no need to panic, as prices will recover, but you could make some additional money if you want to put in the time to manage your Modern stock correctly.
