Power creep can be frustrating. It can be dangerous to a format and can invalidate some of our favorite cards. However, Misery's Shadow is a great example of a successful upgrade that makes you feel like you are still playing Nantuko Shade—merely "adjusted for inflation" to match the other cards of this era. Looking at the knobs to tweak, much has been improved: +1 toughness, colorless pump, an easier mana cost, and a potent static ability.

Why is this good power creep? The card is not offensive. It's beautifully designed. The static ability is defensive in nature, it restricts a facet of your opponent's plan while providing you with a clock. It's a very valid sideboard option for decks that can afford to pay one single black mana. But it still brings you all the time-tested sub-game Nantuko Shade used to provide. Do you use it to be aggressive or to block? Do you tap out? After all 2 toughness is easy to destroy with a simple Shock. The whole design feels more elegant and rewarding than, let's say, a wall of text like Questing Beast.

Here's a decklist from the biggest tournament success that Nantuko Shade helped achieve, back in 2002. Both semifinalists at this event ran versions of the same deck too, bringing the total number of Shades in the Top 4 up to twelve!

We are thrilled to announce that we have none other than Hall of Fame member Frank Karsten himself facing off this week against Mythic Invitational champion Andrea Mengucci in a clash of titans. Can Frank, piloting the cheapest competitive deck in Modern, defeat Andrea playing the best deck in the format?

Game design is an adventure, and Wizards have had to make some changes along the way. Here are five cards that were once very strong and never fully recovered after the rules of the game changed. We made a game out of it, so see if you can guess all five!
