"At first I hated blue! A friend and I picked up Magic in the summer of '94, and my first deck was a Revised Edition 60-card starter with only two Islands. Having just two blue mana sources made it almost impossible to cast Phantasmal Terrain to change one of my friend's lands into an Island and attack him with my biggest creature, a 5/5 Sea Serpent.
"A few additional boosters and a several Islands later, it all changed when I discovered my one true love in the world of Magic. It was a blue enchantment with an odd illustration of a clown and a jackal-headed figure on a seesaw and a text box beginning with seven words that would drive my friends crazy for years to come: 'Players do not get an untap phase.'
"At that moment, when I first laid eyes on Stasis, a Johnny was born. Since then, Magic for me has never just been about winning but about winning in silly, annoying, and janky ways—preferably using blue spells.
"Stasis is still my favorite card. And if you run into me at my local game store, I will probably still be trying to make my homebrewed Legacy Stasis deck work against the harsh odds in a meta awash with Force of Vigor and Carpet of Flowers."
