The new Single Strike Master set in Japan introduces the exciting Single Strike mechanic to the TCG, along with Urshifu VMAX in its Single Strike form. These cards focus on big attacks dealing powerful blows, with multiple different cards supporting the mechanic, along with support for future sets as well.
Take Urshifu VMAX for example – It's [G-Max One Blow] attack deals a huge 270 damage, and goes through all effects on the opponent's Active Pokémon (though you have to discard all of the Energy attached to Urshifu VMAX to use the attack). This is great at knocking out pretty much every single Tag Team Pokémon in the format, but this damage can be further increased using the new Single Strike Energy card that can only be attached to Single Strike Pokémon. This Energy provides either a Dark or a Fighting Energy (one at a time), and also increases the damage done to the opponent's Active Pokémon by 20 damage. This means you can even do enough damage to reach VMAX Pokémon's HP, knocking them out in one hit.
G-Max One Blow costs four Energy, but that isn't a problem when you have the new Houndoom with the [Single Strike Roar] Ability to help you reach this high Energy cost. [Single Strike Roar] allows you to attach new Single Strike Energy from your deck to one of your Single Strike Pokémon, putting two damage counters on the Pokémon in the process. That is already a great Ability, but the extra two damage counters can be costly sometimes. However, even that can be turned into an advantage with the Single Strike Scroll of Scorn. This Pokémon Tool lets the Single Strike Pokémon it is attached to use [Fury] for one Fighting Energy, which deals 10 plus an additional 10 Damage for each damage counter on this Pokémon. And when you consider Single Strike Urshifu VMAX's huge HP, that can mean dealing a massive amount of damage in one hit!
To round off the Single Strike package, there is the Tower of Darkness (a Stadium which lets you discard a Single Strike card from your hand to draw two cards), Urn of Vitality (an Item which lets you shuffle in two Single Strike Energy cards from your discard pile into you deck) and Bruno (a Supporter card that lets you shuffle your hand into your deck and draw seven cards if one of your Pokémon was KO-ed during your turn last turn). There is also a new Primeape that can be supported with the Single Strike package that does 50 damage for each of your Benched Pokémon if they have any damage counters on them. This can quickly mount up with the extra damage from Single Strike Energy, along with some older combinations like Spiritomb and Jynx to help too!
The new Japanese Single Strike Master set releases on 22 January 2021. The Single Strike cards all work excellently together, but there are also some other fantastic cards in the set, including Tapu Koko VMAX that can auto-paralyse the opponent's Active Pokémon if they are ahead on Prizes, a Bronzong that lets you freely move around your Metal Energy (much like the ever-popular Aromatisse from XY) and a Salazzle which can do a massive 270 damage for two Colourless Energy if the opponent's active Pokémon is affected by three special conditions! This set is certainly one of the hardest hitting of all time.
