The Star Wars franchise has been made into board and card games countless times, but something about Star Wars: Destiny makes it a bit more special: The core of the game is about the characters of Star Wars engaging in duels between two commanding players.
The characters you play are not randomly drawn from the deck. Instead, you start the game with characters already in play with their according dice equipped. Your deck will contain upgrades and supports to further add dice to your side. Thematic events will also help control the board state and mitigate dice luck on both sides. The battle continues until one player defeats all the opponent´s Characters or one of the players has run out of cards.
Awakenings consists of two starter sets and a set of boosters totaling 174 different cards of which 67 come with associated dice. The theme of the starter sets is based on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) movie, while the booster set contains characters and themes from various sources of the Star Wars canon.
In Star Wars: Destiny you can mix characters from different timelines, letting play your favorite characters in unexpected combinations. For example, you can construct a team of heroes with Qui-Gon Jinn and Rey and let one of them wield Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber to defeat your foes. You could also play a team of villains with Darth Vader - Sith Lord and a Tusken Raider and let them use the power of Sith Holocron to equip force ability upgrades for free. This villainous team was also used in the 2017 Destiny World Champion deck. Lastly, the Awakenings set contains famous vehicles such as AT-ST and the Millennium Falcon which have a high resource cost to play but come with a powerful die.
Although Awakenings is the oldest Star Wars: Destiny expansion, it is still Standard format legal until February/March 2019 and will be always legal in the Infinity format.
Many Awakenings cards have been overshadowed by cards in the newer sets, but there are still numerous staples from Awakenings which are still used in current meta. One of those cards is the aforementioned Sith Holocron which has been used in recent top tier decks thanks to its unique ability and zero cost. Cunning is another Upgrade that has been part of many Yellow decks with strong special die sides on Characters such as Leia Organa - Boushh from the Across the Galaxy expansion. Various Event cards from this set are also still very prevalent in the current meta such as Hyperspace Jump and Feel Your Anger.
Awakenings was released in 25 November 2016 with an MSRP of $ 2.99 (2,64 €) per booster pack and $ 14.95 (13,18 €) per starter set.
