It's Summertime! The sun is bright and with it comes a brand-new booster set: V Booster Set 05 Aerial Steed Liberation. Advertised as a Paladin set, this fifth main booster includes support for the two bright Paladin clans, Royal and Gold Paladin, Oracle Think Tank, Nubatama, and Narukami. This set includes 80 new cards (five VR, eight RRR, 12 RR, 17 R, 38 C) plus 20 Parallel cards (five SVR, 12 SP, one SCR, two XVR) with an MSRP of 4,00 € for each booster pack.
Aichi Sendou is back again with one of his main Royal Paladin units: Solitary Knight, Gancelot. In Planet Cray, Gancelot is the general that commands the troops that defend United Sanctuary, making him of major importance in his clan. In the battlefield of Cardfight!! Vanguard, Gancelot is highly synergic with Blaster Blade, giving all Blaster Blades on his side of the field +10000 [Power]. However, it's his second ability that will have a major impact on the meta: If the opponent's Vanguard is at least grade 3, the Rear-Guard circles (RC) with Blaster Blade on them become Vanguard circles (VC). This means additional drive checks while attacking and allowing the activation of abilities that were VC-exclusive outside of this circle. Drive checking is an easy and fast source of card advantage and this new synergy between Solitary Knight, Gancelot and Blaster Blade will change the Royal Paladin tactics, thus directly impacting the metagame.
Better known by their fast-paced tactics and their shiny armor, Gold Paladin is receiving some love in the fifth edition of the V Series. The third form of the lion in disguise Ezel will try to improve to current Gold Paladin deck while maintaining their core. Blazing Lion, Platina Ezel is a Gold Paladin unit with an Oracle Think Tank feel since he gets to change the drive check as we currently know it. The player gets to look at two cards from the top of their deck, reveals one card in their trigger zone, and calls one card to the (RC) by paying [Counter Blast (1)]. Furthermore, if Platina Ezel has a grade 3 unit in his soul, the second drive check also changes! Adding drive check manipulation to an aggro essence, the "goldest" of the Paladins can climb the ladder of the metaplay.
Speaking of drive manipulation, one the oldest Ride Chains is rising once again from the first chapters of Cardfight!! Vanguard history. Goddess of the Full Moon, Tsukuyomi is the deity of the moon in Japanese mythology and a drive check fortune teller in the trading card game. In the V Series, while Tsukuyomi is in the (VC), by paying [Counter Blast (1)] and by discarding a card, the Oracle Think Tank player chooses up to three cards with "Tsukuyomi" in their card name from their soul and draws one card for each card chosen. If three cards were chosen, the player proceeds to look at five cards from the top of the deck and puts two cards from among them on the top of the deck, planning the perfect drive check of the next attack. Also, when Tsukuyomi reveals two or more triggers, three units on the front row get +10000 [Power]. Combining drive check alteration with a [Power] boost, Goddess of the Full Moon, Tsukuyomi is the true goddess of the Oracle Think Tank deck.
While V Booster Set 05: Aerial Steed Liberation is primarily a United Sanctuary booster, but Nubatama and Narukami from Dragon Empire also have a part in this play. Shura Stealth Dragon, Jamyocongo and Eradicator, Gauntlet Buster Dragon have different mechanics but the same objective: controlling the opposing resources by using either the discard or the retire mechanic. Both can dry up the opponent from having cards and win by overwhelming the competition in a more "control" style. The Summer vibes might not be that obvious, but Aerial Steed Liberation is without a doubt a refreshing change of pace in the Standard metagame.
