New year, new V Booster in the Cardfight!! Vanguard universe! Miyaji Academy brings some familiar faces with the return of Royal Paladin, Oracle Think Tank, and Gold Paladin plus two new clans to the Standard format: the ninjas of Nubatama and the Thunder Dragons of Narukami.
This set includes 84 new cards (five VR, eight RRR, 12 RR, 17 R, and 42 C) plus 13 Parallel cards (five SVR, six OR, two IMR). And for the first time ever, each display can include up to two VRs instead of just one. The MSRP of each Miyaji Academy CF Club booster pack is 4,00 €.
In the lore, Nubatama is one of the Dragon Empire's espionage corps with a focus on gathering intelligence. In the battlefield, their ninja-like aesthetic comes alive with abilities like bouncing to the hand, Superior calling from the hand, or using units as fodder. Their main unit is Covert Demonic Dragon, Magatsu Storm, an old unit that uses the ride chain mechanic and is nowadays one of the best defensive units Vanguard has ever seen: When he's attacked by the opponent's Vanguard, by paying [Counter Blast (1)] and retiring two units, Magatsu Storm cannot be hit until the end of the battle. In other words, he can Perfect Guard himself. Adding the Protect Imaginary Gift and four Perfect Guards (allowed) per deck, Nubatama will be a wall impossible to climb. Magatsu Storm also has an offensive tactic: When a Nubatama unit is returned to the hand, with [Soul Blast (1) grade 3], the player gets to draw a card and call three cards from their hand with an extra 5000 [Power]. Pretty good for a unit that nullifies Vanguard attacks in a stealthy way!
Where there's smoke, there's fire – a fire caused by a lightning strike in this situation. The dragons of Narukami are back with their promised support. Detonix Drill Dragon is without a doubt their win condition, since he gets to attack twice per Battle Phase when certain conditions are met. When he attacks, by paying [Counter Blast (1)], he gets to bind a Rear-Guard in the opponent's front row. Then, if the Narukami player discards cards equal to the number of the opponent's Rear-Guards, Detonix gets [Stand], an additional 5000 [Power], and -1 drive checks. Since binding Rear-Guards is the main ability of Narukami, with emblematic units like Dragonic Deathscythe, Detonix Drill Dragon can [Stand] without discarding a card when the opponent's side of the field is empty. Synergy above all for the lightning lizards!
However, the Nubatama and Narukami clans aren't alone in this class. Royal Paladin, Gold Paladin, and Oracle Think Tank got even better with some sweet and spicy support. Monarch Sanctuary Alfred is the new sheriff in the Royal Paladin town, giving +10000 [Power] and +5000 [Shield] to all Blaster Blades at all times! Furthermore, when Alfred enters the battlefield, by paying [Counter Blast (1) & Soul Blast (1)], he gets to return a Blaster Blade to the player's hand and gains 1 [Critical] if another Alfred is in the soul. So, if you need one more reason to run a full Blaster Blade playset, here it is.
Everyone's favorite lion is also back with a darker haircut. Raven-haired Ezel can be Superior ridden from the hand if Incandescent Lion, Blond Ezel is in the soul. He also gets +15000 [Power] and +1 [Critical] when attacking, while his blonde counterpart is in the soul, making your opponent unable to call Sentinels to guard this attack. With a finisher of this caliber, Gold Paladin will redefine aggro decks.
Last but not least, Oracle Think Tank (OTT) has new tarot cards for their fortune-telling business with the update that Magus deserved. Magus is an old OTT archetype relaunched in Trial Deck 05: Misaki Tokura that focuses on seeing the top card of the player's deck and manipulating drive checks. Pentagonal Magus is a massive boost to this sub-clan because she increases the [Power] of trigger effects by 5000. In addition, by paying [Soul Blast (1) grade 3] and discarding five cards, Pentagonal gets +3 drive checks. Note that each front row Rear-Guard with Magus in their name reduces the discard cost by one. This ability, with top-card peeking, can finish the game by storm.
Five clans in a single booster and the possibility of two VRs in a single display sets a record for the V Series. Miyaji Academy is also marked by fan-favorite immune, self-standing, and Superior ridden Vanguards. The power and deck diversity level of the Standard format is increasing. So come on in, the water’s definitely fine.
