New formats, new Start Decks! The most exciting part of any new format is its beginning, where everything can happen. It all starts with a bunch of pre-constructed decks to introduce new mechanics, new characters to grab the attention of new and old. In Cardfight!! Vanguard OverDress, major alliances were made between the old clans to establish a more powerful Planet Cray and the result was the creation of six nations, one of them being Dragon Empire, the guest star of D Start Deck 01: Yu-yu Kondo -Holy Dragon.
Each D Start Deck 01 contains a 50-card pre-constructed deck with 15 different cards, one of them being holographic, plus a paper playmat. D Start Deck releases on 14 May 2021 and the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of each pre-constructed deck is 3,99 €.
Dragon Empire was the only nation that didn’t change its name after the events that happened after Gyze fell. It was formed with the alliance of Kagero, Narukami, Nubatama, Murakumo, and Tachikaze that have always shared an adulation for dragons. Given their status as the true number one contender for most popular nation, Bushiroad granted them the [overDress] mechanic.
[overDress] is a simple yet elegant mechanic. Whenever a unit with [overDress] is Normal Called to a Rear-Guard circle, the player may instead perform [overDress] by placing it on top of another Rear-Guard that meets certain conditions. In the end, it’s just like riding your own Rear-Guard to represent an evolution of the character with that keyword.
Trickstar and Vairina meet exactly these criteria. Vairina, the natural evolution of Trickstar, can perform [overDress] by placing itself on top of Trickstar (and triggering some abilities in the process!). While she is in the [overDress] state and attacks a Vanguard, Vairina gets [Power]+10000 until the end of the battle. Then, by paying [Soul Blast (2)], she retires one Rear-Guard from the opponent - just like a true Kagero.
While Vairina gets the spotlight for introducing us the main mechanic of this season, Chakrabarthi Divine Dragon, Nirvana tries to close games. Nirvana is the one that should be in every Dragon Empire’s Ride deck since he’s the engine that allows Vairina to [overDress] on demand. By discarding a card from his hand, the player chooses a grade 0 from their drop zone and calls it to a Rear-Guard circle. This ability can keep reviving Trickstar, so Vairina can [overDress] much more easily. Due to this close interaction between Nirvana and the new mechanic, his second ability is again related to it: When Nirvana attacks, by paying [Counter Blast (1)], all [overDress] units, including himself, gets [Power]+10000 until the end of the turn. Maybe not the flashiest ability, but it gets the job done!
Cardfight!! Vanguard’s path is yet to be known, but the five D Start Decks that Bushiroad is launching opens up a new chapter in the TCG with endless possibilities. New players are only 4,00 € away from starting the journey of their lives and discoveing a new way to Cardfight!! their hearts out.
