Konami Kicks Off the New Year with Extreme Force

Konami began 2018 by releasing the third mainline expansion in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains era – Extreme Force. As usual, this means players have access to new archetypes and tons of support for old archetypes, in addition to a handful of playable cards for any occasion. This expansion contains 100 cards, including 8 Secret Rares, 10 Ultra Rares, 14 Super Rares, 20 Rares, and 48 Commons. Extreme Force released on 1 February 2018 has an expected booster pack MSRP of $3.99 (est. 3,25€).

Mekk-Knights and Mythical Beasts Force Their Way into the TCG

Any discussion of a new Yu-Gi-Oh! booster pack requires a discussion about the main archetypes that see support in the set. For Extreme Force, we have two – an old archetype, seeing new love in the form of Pendulum monsters and a new archetype, adding to the bevy of Link-focused archetypes we already have in the VRAINS era.

Mythical Beasts and Where to Find Them

Mythical Beasts had been around for a long time in the TCG, but they only had one card – Mythical Beast Cerberus. Cerberus showed up in almost any deck or set involving spellcasters, due to its ability to easily generate spell counters whenever spell cards resolve. Extreme Force changed all that, giving the archetype a whole array of new Pendulum monsters. Two notable new additions are Mythical Beast Master Cerberus and Mythical Beast Jackal King. Both Pendulum Monsters have a pendulum scale of 4 and both allow players to trade the pendulum monsters for other Mythical Beasts from the deck. However, Jackal Beast doesn’t just tutor, instead allowing players to summon any Mythical Beast Pendulum monster from your deck, which can easily put the fierce 2800 attack Master Cerberus into play.


The other major new archetype in Extreme Force is Mekk-Knight, boasting eight new creatures in this pack as well as a host of support spells. Each Mekk-Knight is associated with a color, like Mekk-Knight Blue Sky. They, like many recent Link Monsters, deal primarily with columns, giving advantages based on the number of cards in each column. Blue Sky, for example, can be special summoned to any column in which there are two or more cards.

Other Influential Cards and a New Trunade

Players don't only get new archetypes in Extreme Force; they also received a plethora of amazing utility cards and support for older archetypes. Noble Knights, for example, are getting a new link monster which gives powerful reach within their own deck – Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights. Saryuja Skull Dread provides players with an easy-to-summon link monster with numerous powerful effects based on the number of monsters used to summon it. Lastly, Konami has taken another shot at mass Spell/Trap removal with Hey Trunade! A redesigned Giant Trunade bounces set Spell/Trap cards instead of all Spell/Trap cards.
