2019 is starting off strong with a brand-new expansion for the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game! Savage Strike is an all-new core set that introduces new archetypes and support for loads of familiar decks, ensuring that duelists start the year with a bang. Expected to hugely influence the metagame, this set contains 100 cards, 8 Secret Rares, 10 Ultra Rares, 14 Super Rares, 20 Rares, and 48 Commons.
We start with the cover card: Borreload Savage Dragon. This card is quite the surprise because it’s the first Borrel Dragon that isn’t a Link Monster! Borreload Savage Dragon is a Level 8 Synchro Monster with an interesting effect: When he is Synchro Summoned (you just need a Tuner and a non-Tuner Monster), you can equip a Link Monster from your graveyard to Borreload. Borreload then gains Borrel Counters equal to the monster’s Link rating with half the ATK. Once during either players' turn, when your opponent activates a Monster effect, you can negate it by removing a Borrel Counter. Not only is this card strong attack-wise, but it’s also great at defense.
Orcustrated Knightmare is a brand-new Knightmare that can easily fit in your main deck. Orcustrated Knightmare is a Level 7 DARK monster that can be summoned from Knightmare Mermaid. This gives it great potential in Link decks, like Dark Warrior or Orcust. Level 7 monsters are quite popular these days.
Savage Strike also introduces more 1-card wonders like The Lone Wolf. When this Level 4 DARK Beast is summoned, it lets you banish a monster from your hand, then banishes a monster of the same type from your deck. When The Lone Wolf is destroyed, you can add a banished card to your hand. This effect may seem weak, but when you combine it with the powerful Thunder Dragons introduced in Soul Fusion, you can get up to some great shenanigans.
Savage Strike is definitely a great start to 2019. Aside from the great cards already mentioned, also be prepared for a new archetype: Guardragons are an all-new Dragon Link series. It has plenty of support for beloved archetypes that we’ve already seen in the game. And when we say plenty, we mean it! Expect more Shiraniu, Subterror, Sky Strikers, Madolche, T.G., Elemental HERO, Trickstar, Salamangreat, World Legacy, Prankids, and even after this list, much much more. Savage Strike lands on 31 January 2019.
