The Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links mobile game is coming to the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game via Speed Duel Starter Decks. Speed Dueling is a brand-new format wherein players start with 4000 LP, four cards in the starting hand, 20 to 30 cards in the main deck, and a maximum of five cards in the extra deck. The format has no Main Phase 2 and has a new mechanic utilizing Skill cards, which are unfortunately not legal in regular Constructed tournaments. This "basic" version of the TCG is meant to be fast and refreshing, but also nostalgic for the digital players.
The Speed Duel Starter Decks: Destiny Masters is a bundle with three ready-to-play Starter Decks, based on the decks from the famous anime characters Yami Yugi, Ishizu Ishtar, and Maximillion Pegasus. Each deck contains 20 cards and three Skill cards, fully themed in the playstyle of each Millenium Item duelist.
Skill cards are one of the highlights of this new game mode. You can only use one Skill card per duel. This means duelists must carefully consider which Skill card best fits their overall strategy as the chosen one will be very impactful on the game. Also note that Skill cards can be activated only when its activation requirements have been met.
One of Yami Yugi's Skills, for example, is Final Draw. This can only be used when you lose 2000 LP or more, then you can activate it during your next Standby Phase. Instead of your normal draw, you can add one card from the deck to your hand instead. Ishizu Ishtar's, on the other hand, can rearrange the top three cards from the opponent’s deck before they can draw. with Millennium Necklace. Finally, Pegasus who is known for his Toon decks has a Skill card called It's a Toon World! letting you start with a key card right away as it places itself in your Spell and Trap Zones. This Skill enables you to no longer rely on drawing the actual Toon World and paying 1000 LP, but at the cost of not being able to play other Skill cards. These are only three of the nine total Skill cards in Destiny Masters.
Each of the three Duel Starter Decks is based on a character from the anime and each character is well-known for their ace cards in the show. The decks in Destiny Masters fully represent these. Yami Yugi plays a Spellcaster deck, with cards like Dark Magician (with an alternative art), Dark Magician Girl, Sage's Stone and Legion the Fiend Jester. Ishizu Ishtar uses her Gravekeepers to put pressure on her opponent. Pegasus brings his Toons together with the powerful Relinquished.
These three decks, combined with the other three decks in Speed Duel Starter Decks: Duelists of Tomorrow, give Yu-Gi-Oh! players hours of exhilarating fun. The arrival of the new Speed Dueling format encourages growth in the future with Konami promising more Star Pack-like boosters to support the new game mode. Each box is sold for an MSRP of $ 9.99 (approx. 8,81 €) and is available beginning 24 January 2018.
