Daily Deck Tech from Capenna: Evelyn, Covetous Commander

Every workday while the Streets of Capenna are new, Insight takes a quick look at another deck featuring the fresh cards! This time we're playing with 100 cards, and with some of our opponents' cards as well. Let's see how our commander Evelyn, the Covetous builds a collection worth coveting!

Any Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge player knows how much fun it is to use other people's cards against them. Evelyn, the Covetous does a similar job. However, unlike Jeleva, which only allows us to cast an exiled instant or sorcery upon attacking, Evelyn let's us cast any card we exiled, on each turn. Leyline of Anticipation and Vedalken Orrery will make sure we can even cast a permanent spell on our opponents' turns.

Another advantage: As Evelyn marks exiled cards with a collection counter, they can still be played even after Evelyn has left the battlefield and has been recast. Finally, Evelyn exiles cards each time a Vampire enters our battlefield, combining two tasty flavors into one.

Vampire Thieves

In order to maximize Evelyn's trigger—and to stay on theme—the deck only runs Vampire creatures. This means that any creature we play while Evelyn is on the battlefield will feel like drawing four cards. Sounds like a powerful strategy. For example, Vampire of the Dire Moon might not see much play in Commander, but in this deck it shines. Similarly, creating Vampire tokens will also trigger Evelyn. So Bloodline Keeper / Lord of Lineage and Reflections of Littjara can generate a lot of value. Sanguine Spy helps us manipulate the top of our library to exile the right card.

Since we are in the house of the Maestros, we need to have Lord Xander, the Collector as a way to generate collateral advantage. Our opponents will think twice before casting a board wipe while Xander is on the battlefield. If they are still not deterred enough, we can use Fake Your Own Death to bring the Lord back.

It Pays to Be Rich

As we will be exiling a lot of cards, we need to find ways to create extra mana to cast them. Glittering Stockpile is a new three-mana rock that over the course of the game can be cashed in to generate a burst of mana. Alternatively, we can use Cormela, Glamour Thief to cast instants and sorceries from exile while also recovering a spell upon dying.

As the game progresses, Mana Geyser and Black Market will also bless us with a lot of mana to use. Spiteful Repossession will help us catch up to any opponent who has more lands than us by dealing damage equal to the difference to them and giving us as many treasure tokens.

The Deck

In Conclusion

Evelyn offers us a new way to play Vampires and really does feel like an upgrade to Jeleva. Instead of focusing on big splashy spells, this tribe will generate value and suck the blood out of our opponents as the game goes on.

With Evelyn as commander, you can play your opponent's whole decks using worldgorger dragon combo (cedh)
